Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
space
…nothing.
Which is usually what happens after an abysmal food waste week. I emptied out my fridge so thoroughly last week, the food waste possibilities were quite slim.
I thought I was going to waste some half and half, but I used some to make hamburger buns yesterday (you can throw almost any dairy product into yeast bread dough!) and then I froze the rest of it to use in the future.
I also managed to save some cilantro by making a pesto with it (sort of like I do when I make my Chicken Tacos), which I slathered onto some chicken that was headed for the grill.
So, since I have no food waste photo, hows about some pictures of my biking companions instead? They’re cuter than rotten food.
Just so you know, Zoe does sit down on her bike sometimes (well, most of the time, actually. Just not for pictures, apparently.)
Oh, and Lisey and I DID bake, but we didn’t get a post put together yet. Hopefully by tomorrow!

The weather up here in Michigan has been unbelievably warm for the beginning of March. It made my heart smile this week seeing all the little kids outside riding their bikes and brought back great memories of being a little kid and my dad bringing down our bikes from the garage attic when spring started.

No waste this week for us. Thought we might but we just eeked out getting our leftovers eaten.

I finally made a list instead of relying on memory. Based on one data point, I remember waste that's my fault but not always waste that just happens.
My fault: - most of a sweet red pepper (left forgotten on my desk overnight) - about 3 oz spinach (the bag was larger than I could eat before it started to slime)
Not my fault: - about 1/4 onion, because it went bad 3 layers below the surface - hamburger bun and french fries from a doggie bag (who wants leftover french fries? ick)
Triumph: - making dried orange peel
In danger: - half a bunch of kale

Though I love the kale - I let it get nasty FAR too often.
I successfully resuscitated french fries from a togo bag this week - but it did take firing up the oven - I spread them out on a cookie sheet and baked them for a while, tossing them around now and then. Yup - they crisped up again, and were very very happy.
I did a big refrigerator clean-out and will not be specifying most of the ickyness that went in the trash. The biggest baddie was a batch of brown rice noodles in peanut sauce. I guess it really isn't true that I'll eat ANYTHING draped in peanut sauce, 'cause these noodles were borderline when I made them, and got worse as leftovers. No, they didn't behave like wheat noodles. So they're out of my cupboard, which is great - but I could have put them straight in the trash and had the lovely peanut sauce on real noodles or rice. Sigh.
Fresh start on food waste this week.

Wasted 3 ears of corn that i was so excited to buy and then, two weeks later, still had not eaten and they were slimy.

On a side note, when did your kiddos show an interest in learning to ride a bike/any pedal-pushing toy? My almost 4 year old REFUSES to learn (despite begging for a bike for his 3rd b-day that he now wants to sell because he's sat on it all of once). Thanks :)

Having older siblings riding has definitely helped. All of my kids have been on the older end of the spectrum when it comes to riding bikes, though...Sonia only just got rid of her training wheels and she's 8!

When all of his best friends are riding around on their bike probably. My son was a bit afraid of riding a bike and I tried to get him to attempt it and teach him, but in the end he learned from his friends grandmother, if I remember right. They had a flat court and well, the motivation from my son was there when it wasn't when my husband and I tried. Don't let him give away/sale his bike. I bet by the time he is 6 he will be bike riding.
