As I mentioned yesterday, I didn’t go grocery shopping last week, so by Monday of this week, we were out of a few things. Most importantly, I was out of yeast, and I can’t go on very long like that! So, the kids and I made a quick trek to Costco. I spent $34.52 there for:
-OJ
-grapes
-salt
-pancake syrup
-2 pounds of blueberries
-a bag of bananas
-a 2 pound bag of yeast (only $3.79, which so totally rocks!)
My husband also made a quick stop at a local grocery store to get toilet paper, local peaches, and milk, for a total of $8.81.
The cow we get our milk from is producing less than usual, so I only got one gallon of milk this week, for $4.
Then on Thursday I did my usual Goodwill/Aldi/Weis trip. I spent $16.21 at Weis and $42.24 at Aldi. All that adds up to $105.78. Considering that I was out of a lot of things and that I didn’t spend much at all on groceries last week, I’m pretty ok with being $5.78 over budget.
These are my groceries from Weis and Aldi…the milk, the Costco trip, and the local store trip are not pictured here, so this is not $105.78 worth of food.
My produce (I have tons of green beans and tomatoes from my parents’ garden, plus I bought some produce at Costco, so I didn’t need to buy a lot):
and everything else:
Breakfasts and lunches will be nothing out of the ordinary…cereal, granola, fruit, oatmeal, and toast for breakfast, and yogurt smoothies, bread, fruit, and some leftovers for lunch.
Here’s what we’re eating for dinner this week.
Saturday
- Seafood Quesadillas (hee-hee. My spell check has suggested “quadrilles” instead!)
- Corn on the cob
- fresh peaches
Sunday
- Buttermilk Waffles
- OJ
Monday
- Grilled Hamburgers
- homemade buns
- fresh peaches
- green beans
Tuesday
- Italian Grilled Chicken (I’m trying Cook’s method of grilling an entire chicken)
- green salad
- whatever bread needs using
Wednesday
- Bratwurst on buns
- green beans
- potato chips
Thursday
- Chicken Panini sandwiches, made with leftover chicken from Tuesday
- green salad
Friday
- Pizza Margherita
- some sort of veggie…not sure what yet

Don't be ashamed. Imitation crab meat = seasoned pollack.

Jan-I'll avoid the Magic Bullet. lol Thank you.
Kim-you salt it and put two bricks on top of it, actually! I'll let you know how it goes. That reminds me...I need to go buy two bricks! lol
Kai-I don't know how our food quantities compare to other families, but none of us are starving. lol We are all well-fed and eat until we are satisfied. We do eat a lot of sandwiches, mostly because none of us are huge fans of meat.
I do have leftovers, which my husband eats in his lunch almost every day. I eat leftovers for lunch when necessary too. I do try not to have tons of leftovers, though, because I find that when I overcook, we end up wasting more food.
Sabrina, to my shame, I will tell you. I combine cooked shrimp, imitation crab meat (that's the shameful part! lol), Old Bay, and cheese. You could, of course, use real crab meat, but I don't often splurge on that.

What exactly do you put in a seafood quesadilla?
I love all the little Peeps in the photo. Her Majesty adores Peeps and used to have a couple of stuffed bunny ones. Much to her dismay, they got lost during the last move.

You do not seem to eat too much, y'know, as I've noticed before, too. Wich, ofcorse is actually healthy... In our family there was always alot of food cooked and eaten and only slowly now, as an adult, i'm starting to liberate myself from those eating habits. You seem to eat mostly sandwich-sort-of-a-things + a bit of veggies/fruits. Approximately how much of the food do You calculate for each (grownup) person? You don't seem to get much leftovers, do You? Normally leftover are concidered to be an important part of frugal cooking... Anyways, I enjoy Your blog alot! (greetings from a little country called Estonia :-)
