On Saturdays, I share my menu plan for the upcoming week along with a photo of my groceries and a tally of my spending. My goal is to spend $100/week for our food, toiletries, and cleaning products. I’m currently in the midst of trying to buy more local, sustainably-produced food while sticking to my budget. Can it be done? I don’t know, but I’m going to try, and I’ll share what I learn as I go along.
I don’t actually have a grocery spending report or picture for you, because I haven’t gone yet! I was supposed to go yesterday, but our power was out and I wasn’t interested in bringing home groceries to a fridge that might go warm on me.
We got tons and tons of rain on Thursday/Friday (I think 8 inches or so), and one of my neighbors has a very low spot in his yard. The water collected there until it was about a foot deep at its worst, which was bad news for this tree.
It couldn’t quite take the soggy ground.
It landed smack-dab on our street’s power lines.
And smack dab on this truck too! (which is not mine)
So, yesterday morning Mr. FG and I both had candlelit showers (our hot water heater still had hot water in it, which was lovely), and I had a candlelit couple of hours before the kids got up. Since I couldn’t blog (I usually do that after I read my Bible), I spent that time reading my advance copy of American Wasteland, a book about food waste written by fellow blogger Jonathan Bloom. I’ll tell you more about it once I finish it, but I think it’s awesome so far!
Anyways, I’m going to go grocery shopping today, but for now I do have a menu plan to share.
By the way, some of you that are newer around here might enjoy reading some of my previous posts on menu planning…you can read about why I plan my menu, how I plan my menu, how I come up with meal ideas, and more.

glad that isn't your truck. feel bad for whoever the owner is though. grilled bratwurst is on our menu for tonight as well. i've got a spicy baked tilapia recipe on this week's menu too. just curious, what is your favorite takeout?

For what it's worth, I really like your menu plan part of these posts, but don't care all that much about the picture of your groceries. I assume putting out your groceries and taking a picture is more time-consuming then writing up your weekly menu, so I thought I'd throw that out there! :)

You might want to let everyone know your contest for the books is over. People are still posting that they would like to win.

Nope, they're good! I usually feed them something they like (a snacky dinner, macaroni and cheese, etc), so they're happy campers. :)
