On Saturdays, I share my menu plan for the upcoming week along with a photo of my groceries and a tally of my spending. My goal is to spend $100/week for our food, toiletries, and cleaning products. I’m currently in the midst of trying to buy more local, sustainably-produced food while sticking to my budget. Can it be done? I don’t know, but I’m going to try, and I’ll share what I learn as I go along.
I’m thrilled that my Saturday this week will not be nearly as busy as my Saturday last week, which happened to be Lisey’s birthday. I don’t need to do nearly as much work in the kitchen today, which makes me happy. Because much as I love cooking and baking, making communion bread, snake rolls, birthday cake, jello salad, fried shrimp, chocolate cookie dough, and raspberry coffeecake was a little much for one day.
It’s an off-week for grocery shopping, but after I went to the gym yesterday, I did stop at Aldi to pick up a few things. I spent $19 and got toilet paper, grapes, grapefruit, spinach, milk, toothpaste, dark chocolate, and strawberries.
Breakfasts this week are the usual choices…cereal, toast, fruit, yogurt, eggs, or hot cereal.
Lunches will be comprised of sandwiches made with whole wheat bread, homemade yogurt, yogurt smoothies, cottage cheese, fruit, raw veggies, nuts, cheese, and leftovers as necessary. Of course, we don’t eat all of that every single day…that’s just a list of the things we choose from for lunch each day. And Mr. FG eats leftovers for lunch pretty much every day.
And this is what we’re eating for dinner:
Saturday
- Pizza. I’m not sure what kind yet, though I think I might make thin crust pizza because it’s Sonia’s favorite, and I haven’t made it in a few weeks.
- steamed broccoli. I meant to cook it last night, but forgot, so we’re having it as a very nontraditional pizza accompaniment.
Sunday
- We’re going to a friend’s house after church tomorrow (This is the friend who wrote the fun post about food waste I linked to last night on Facebook…she’s blogging the process of decluttering her house and the pantry/fridge was her zone this week). Anyway, I’m bringing a dessert and I haven’t yet decided what dessert to make! Last night I dreamt that I brought a chocolate cake…is that a sign??
Monday
- Shrimp Taco Salad
- potato bread
Tuesday
- Meatball Subs
- green salad
Wednesday
- Grilled Chicken with Avocado Salsa
- fruit salad
Thursday
- Tilapia, but I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to do with it.
- breadsticks
- green beans
Friday
- Pizza (normally this is date night and Saturday is pizza night, but on Saturday, we’ll be at a wedding, and I figure that counts as a date night. So, Friday and Saturday will be flip-flopped).
Have a lovely Saturday, dear readers! 🙂
