Every week, I post a picture of the food that has gone bad over the last seven days. Why do I do this? Because in March of 2008, I finally got fed up with the amount of food I was wasting, and I thought that showing my waste to other people would motivate me to use up my food instead of wasting it. Because this often embarrassing practice was so helpful for me, I invited other bloggers to join me in posting their food waste photos, and Food Waste Friday was born.
I not only cleaned OUT my fridge this week, I actually cleaned it. You know…wiping down the shelves and all that.
Go me!
In the process, I found quite a pile of things to get rid of. It was mostly compostable produce, although I also found a super-duper incredibly old bit of jerk sauce.
In happier news, I also found some slightly old milk and some sour cream that had been frozen in the back of the fridge (whoops.)
Ok, that’s not the happy part. What I did with the milk and sour cream is the happy bit.
I was planning on making pulled chicken sandwiches, so I made a batch of the dough I use to make my honey-glazed rolls, and used the milk and the sour cream for part of the liquids (since no glaze was happening, I also bumped the sweetener up to 1/4 cup.)
These things are always so good (and the frozen sour cream didn’t change that!)…I think I’d rather eat one than a donut, actually.

I may have to try that bun recipe. Tried making buns before and they weren't the right size or quite right.
Food waste this week... a pepper, that felt fine, but was moldy and rotten on the top/inside, two cucumbers. A reasonable week, at least better than some we have had this summer with our first ever CSA.
No great food saves this week.

With the mother-in-law in town it was a week of food ups & downs.
Food Waste: Whole pineapple (I normally clean them as soon as I get home, but MIL had other plans) 2 Pluots (lost in the recesses of the fridge), a small takeout box of choppino (not good reheated), about 1/2 cup of rice (also lost in the back of the fridge). Three or four pieces of a romaine heart. (I used as much as I could I swear!!!)
Food Successes: Chicken 79 cents a pound!!! Whoop whoop! Bought a buncha buncha pounds. Cut up, Cooked, Shredded, Made broth, Etc Etc. Final result. 15 qts chicken broth, 6-1lb bags of shredded chicken, 3 Whole frozen chickens and 3 chickens cut into pieces and frozen. Im hoping this will last until January-February.

I emptied and cleaned my fridge this week, too. I had been wondering where all my quart-size canning jars were, then I found FOUR almost empty jars of applesauce, two partial jars of pizza sauce, and something that may have been chicken stock at some point in time. Now my shelf of jars is full again, and my fridge is much emptier! Cleaning the fridge is a chore I dread, but I always feel SO good once it's done.

Those rolls look delicious and a really good save idea for the cream. We had lots of bread go to waste here this week. Boo.

I really like how your buns evolved from the roll recipe; I'm still working on my bun shaping technique, got any tips? I make homemade crock pot yogurt, does that sub for sour cream as well {what if I added whey to thin out} That's a great container for your buns too. Thanks for your advice.

I make mine into balls by placing a lump of dough in my hand and pulling the edges to the middle until a smooth ball is formed (I hope that makes sense!) Then I flatten the ball some with my hands before placing it on the baking sheet.
